I don't agree with this way of putting matters. First of all, Galloway is a
maverick not a monster. Hardly comparable with Stalin, much less the truly
evil Gerry Healy. Secondly, everyone always knew that this problem could
arise, but it wasn't always the case and it doesn't make the effort
worthless. Thirdly, and most importantly, your retort seems to posit an
Essence of Galloway, as if he isn't affected by surrounding political
circumstances and remains much the same as he was when he started his
political career at the age of thirteen. Yes, he has a past, but in the
height of the antiwar movement, he threw himself heart and soul into that
movement. When he has witch-hunted by the Labour Party, he looked out to
the left, when he could have gone for a comfy media career. He started to
communicate with white working class audiences in a serious way, which was
difficult for him given how much he was villainised. It was never
inevitable that he would retreat to his old ways, but the misguided effort
at populism in Big Brother seems to have sealed it.
