    United States: Debt crisis -- the issue is the war machine, not
    welfare <http://links.org.au/node/2428>

By *Paul Kellogg*
July 27, 2011 -- As July came to an end, the United States central
government had come up against its congressionally mandated debt
ceiling. Without an agreement to raise that debt ceiling -- last set at
US$14.3 trillion -- the US central government will be unable to borrow
money to pay its bills. The consequences could be extremely serious --
soaring interest rates, a collapse of the US dollar, not to speak of
social security stipends, pensions and salaries going unpaid.

    Capitalism is just depressing <http://links.org.au/node/2427>

By *Mark Harris*

July 23, 2011 -- There is no denying it, depression is on the rise
across the world. The World Health Organization says depression will be
the second largest contributor to the global burden of disease by 2020.
For young people this is already the case. Depression leads to about
850,000 deaths every year.

    Should China create a law on workers' strikes?
    <http://links.org.au/node/2426>

July 20, 2011 -- Even though strikes frequently occur across China, the

/permitting/ strikes, but at the same time there is no law /banning/ them.

    The Oslo mass murder and the mainstreaming of racism in Europe;
    Solidarity from Palestine <http://links.org.au/node/2423>

By *Miriyam Aouragh* and *Richard Seymour*
July 27, 2011 -- Media coverage of the Norwegian tragedy was led with
dangerous and clichéd arguments about "Islamic extremism" and
multiculturalism, even after the identity of the killer was confirmed --
thus contributing to the mainstreaming of racism that helped make
far-right mass murderer Anders Breivik what he is.

Links seeks to promote the international exchange of information,
experience of struggle, theoretical analysis and views of political
strategy and tactics within the international left. It is a forum for
open and constructive dialogue between active socialists coming from
different political traditions. It seeks to bring together those in the
international left who are opposed to neoliberal economic and social
policies. It aims to promote the renewal of the socialist movement in
the wake of the collapse of the bureaucratic model of "actually existing
socialism" in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
