--------------010609020901090007080701-- From mburbank@poli-sci.utah.edu Fri Sep 19 18:09:33 2008 From: mburbank@poli-sci.utah.edu (Matthew Burbank) Date: Fri, 19 Sep 2008 11:09:33 -0600 Subject: [Poli-sci-faculty] good news and bad news Message-ID: <48D3DCCD.8030706@poli-sci.utah.edu> Dear Colleagues, There are two items of good news that I wanted to share with you. First, we learned over that summer that Claudio Holzner and a team of other colleagues from our college was awarded a research grant from Russell Sage Foundation for $238,000. Their two year project is titled "Integration of the Undocumented and Documented Immigrants in a New Destination: Utah" and has been initiated through IPIA. Second, Hakan Yavuz has just been notified that his proposal titled "Memory, Migration and Trauma" was awarded $900,000 from the Turkish Cultural Foundation to advance Turkish Studies at the University of Utah. This award is through the Middle East Center and College of Humanities and will provide funds to support scholarship, conferences, graduate students, and community outreach related to the topic of the shaping of Turkish identity in the Republic of Turkey. Please join me in extending congratulations to Claudio and Hakan for their hard work in getting funding to support their scholarly work. Well done! Unfortunately, I also have some bad news to share about our budget. We have just learned from the Dean that the Regents are planning for a 3% cut in this year's hard line budget and anticipating a 3% cut to next year's budget as well. The details of how this budget cut will be implemented have not yet been determined by the state legislature, Regents, or university administration. We expected to learn more about the details of this cut in the coming weeks. While we are considering options for how we might deal with this circumstance, the reality is that a budget cut of this magnitude will have a serious effect on all of us and the operation of the department.
