Agree with that. Katie and I usually meet on Tuesday afternoons, so we can probably work something out around that. I'm interested too!

Would sometime on Tuesday work, or even Wednesday in the evening?

I am available on those days. It would be good to meet.

Dave, could you make it? We would be discussing an idea that you planted the seed for.

I’m not sure we had another meeting on our schedule but let’s have one, and we can talk about this opportunity. How about next week? Tuesday or Wednesday?

Yes, it does seem like a great opportunity. Thanks for initiating this, Bruce.

I, too, would be willing to help with organizing and proposal writing. Unfortunately my timeline is such that I would not be able to be overly involved in any projects once we got up and running, but I'm happy to help out none-the-less.

I think our collective interest in neuroendocrinology, life history theory, and behavior could be a place to start. I want to hear more about what you guys have in mind for an Evolutionary Medicine group. I was not familiar with the term, but Evolutionary Medicine very well characterizes the sort of work I am doing in my thesis projects and the work that Sue Carter is collaborating with me on. She is actually currently working on a synthetic review of "Oxytocin as Medicine." Of course, as I have shared before, I believe Oxytocin is critical for human health and performance, and there is plenty of evidence from the literature to back that up. I think we would have a great shot at getting funding if we were to propose an interdisciplinary project aimed at applying an evolutionary understanding of the Oxytocin system towards health applications. There are many possible target populations that we would be well suited to work with - mothers and their psychological health postpartum, PTSD victims, children with adverse or traumatic developmental histories, LGBT community. I believe an application of the knowledge we are uncovering from the OT - and broader neuroendocrine - literature would be easy to do towards serving any one of these populations.

I am still looking for more funding to do more assays on the samples I have gathered and am continuing to gather from the first-responders and the PTSD patients. If there was any way to tap into some of this funding pot to do additional hormone assays (i.e. sex-hormones, cortisol) or to use for genetics/epigenetics of the receptor genes of interest, that would be wonderful.

Regardless, this intramural funding initiative should be the topic of conversation at our next group meeting... which is??

The College of Nursing is one of the bigger donors and they are strongly encouraging their faculty to participate, I know I would have their support to work on this ( this is me wearing my faculty member hat here), so I can be your Health Sciences partner. Plus, I would actually really love to have an Evolutionary Medicine (or Evolutionary Psychology Health and Performance) group here on campus. EPHP has a nice ring to it. It would be really exciting to have some funding for one or more of the many ideas we have been batting around! I also think there is value in developing an interdisciplinary certificate in this area if we wanted to take on an educational approach. Maybe we could bring Randy on as a consultant?

Bruce, I am in and will do as much organizing as I possibly can! Let's talk more about this. It is an unusual application approach. First come, first served, not sure how that works exactly, but we can find out more.

Interesting suggestion. I am burned out on organizing stuff, so would not want to take a lead role, but would like to see this happen and would support it. As I recall there was a list of folks interested in evolutionary medicine that was circulated when Randy Nesse visited and was trying to drum up interest. There could be some overlap. Not sure whether that developed into an active group, but we could find out.

This may be a mechanisms to consider for our group. Dave earlier suggested: “Could our small group act as the seed of a broader campus-wide group focused on Evolutionary Psychology, Performance and Health?” The NSF mechanism that Dave brought up involved such a high initial investment that many of us shied away from it. This could be much more tractable.

Dear colleagues,

Today, we will officially launch the 1U4U Innovation Funding initiative. This program is designed to seed faculty collaborations in areas of mutual research, scholarship, education and institutional opportunity, bridging both academic affairs and health sciences. You can find all about the program and log in at: https://1u4u.utah.edu/

We believe the biggest social and scientific/engineering problems are too complex to be solved by a single discipline. This initiative aims to allow the type of collaborations that often result in true innovations. We also hope that young researchers and scholars on our campus will have the opportunity to participate in partnerships that will help grow and shape their careers.

Briefly, here is how the project works. Each project must include three faculty members from at least two different colleges and representing both academic affairs and health sciences. Faculty who are on career/tenure line are eligible to participate in the 1U4U Initiative. Faculty data has been preloaded into the system.

Of note: Project teams may include staff and other non-tenure/career line faculty members with appropriate dean or vice president approval, and not all projects require a research focus. If you have non-faculty members within your college who you would like to have participate, please contact your dean or vice president’s office.

Teams may request funding for either $15K or $30K, depending on the size and scope of a proposal. More details will be available at the 1U4U.utah.edu<http://1u4u.utah.edu/> website.

We will launch the website and distribute a message to faculty about this new program tomorrow. Teams will be able to submit proposals beginning Jan. 13, 2020.

We have committed $400,000 in seed funding from our offices; in addition, some colleges and entities have committed varying sums to supplement funding.

We invite you to help us get the word out about this opportunity and thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Dan Reed
Senior Vice President
Academic Affairs

Mike Good
Senior Vice President
Health Sciences
