Subject: Core Course Information

Dear all:

The email below was sent several weeks ago to undergraduate instructors to help them better understand the new policy that requires them to post core course information one week before classes begin. We understand that not everyone received the message so I am resending it to all of you to be sure it has reached all of the instructors in your unit.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions. Happy weekend to all!

Best,
Amy

Dear all:

We are pleased to announce a new policy that was adopted by the Academic Senate at the request of ASUU leadership, and we are asking for your help to implement it next fall.

In the past, students have not always been able to find needed information about undergraduate courses before classes began. This resulted in difficulty when trying to coordinate child care, job responsibilities, and other university activities. In recognition of those difficulties, the new policy adopted by the Senate asks that all instructors make certain core information available to students in their undergraduate courses at least one week before classes begin:

Essential course information shall be made available to enable students to make informed decisions in choosing among courses and setting schedules. It shall be made available at least one week before the first day of class in any semester or session in which the course is offered, if an instructor has been assigned to the course three or more weeks before that first day, and otherwise as early as is practical. The essential course information may be made available as part of the course syllabus or separately, and should include (a) the goals and objectives of the course, (b) the course expectations, including the activities essential for earning credit and those on which grading is based, and, if applicable, (c) a preliminary schedule for the major examinations and assignments.

This means that we are asking instructors to, one week before classes begin this fall (i.e., as of Monday, August 14, 2017), do one of the following:

(1) Post your syllabus

OR

(2) Fill out the Core Course Information Form about your course.

You can then upload the information on the course schedule following the easy steps found here: http://registrar.utah.edu/_pdf/manage-class-links-instructions.pdf.

Please note that the Core Course Information Form is still a DRAFT. If you have suggestions for how to improve it, please send them to Amy Wildermuth (amy.wildermuth at utah.edu<mailto:amy.wildermuth at utah.edu>).

We thank you all for your help in implementing this new policy to support our students. Please feel free to contact either of us if you have any questions or concerns.

Warm regards,

Amy J. Wildermuth, Associate Vice President for Faculty
  Timothy J. Ebner, University Registrar
