DEPARTMENTS: Please forward this email to faculty and staff members who interact with graduate, professional, and medical students.

Graduate Faculty, Administration, and Staff members:

The Graduate School would like to inform you of the recent purchase of a Grammarly Premium subscription for graduate students at the University of Utah. Grammarly Premium is an AI software that helps users correct sentence-level writing errors and improve writing clarity across multiple platforms including word processors, social media, email, and online programs such as Canvas. As of January 2019, all graduate students, including professional and medical students, will have access to this software free of charge.

Your students have been sent an email to their Umail accounts that describes Grammarly and the sign-in process. You can access a web version of this email here: https://mailchi.mp/ab6e9ff02233/announcing-grammarly-a-free-writing-tool-for-uu-grad-students?e=e299d580e5

The purchase of Grammarly Premium is meant to assist students' writing throughout their graduate research careers. Premium benefits include

  * grammar and sentence structure correction
  * suggestions for clarity and readability
  *   plagiarism and citation checks
  *   individualized writing feedback

Grammarly has been shown to be a powerful tool in helping raise the overall quality of writing at other institutions, and we look forward to its successful use among graduate students. We hope that as it is used in concert with the writing support provided by your departments, you will see an increase in your students' writing skill and polish. Because Grammarly is an AI learning software, the longer and more consistently students use the program, the more useful it becomes in assisting the individual student in their writing.

You can help your students access this tool by mentioning it to your graduate classes and advisees. Students who struggle with grammar or written communication may find this program especially helpful, but it is a resource intended for use by students at all levels. Informing students of the availability of this resource, and reminding them as appropriate, will help students make use of Grammarly to increase their writing ability. During Spring 2019, Premium Grammarly will also be integrated into services offered by Writing Center (located in Marriot Library), the Graduate School Thesis office (for clearing dissertations and thesis for publication), and the Graduate Writing initiative, which is working to develop improvements in graduate student writing across the entire graduate curriculum. We also plan to offer one or more public information sessions on Grammarly Premium, coordinated between the Graduate School and the Writing Center. We have attached a Grammarly announcement flyer to this email, which can be forwarded to your students or posted.

Please note that The Graduate School Grammarly Premium subscription only covers graduate students. University faculty, staff, and undergraduate students are not covered. Grammarly does have a free basic subscription option, and the Premium subscription can be purchased individually. In the future, the University may consider expanding the Premium subscription to include faculty, staff, and/or undergraduate students if the graduate student experience is positive. You can email any feedback you have on your students' use of Grammarly to The Graduate School at info at gradschool.utah.edu<mailto:info at gradschool.utah.edu>.

Thank you for your assistance and your continued dedication to excellence in graduate studies.
