FCS Graduate Students - Please plan on attending the Student Research Day on April 28th, 2011.
Many of you have research posters based upon Nick's statistics course, your thesis, or your other
research. I strongly encourage each of you to apply to present at this conference. Please note the
deadline for a title and abstract is coming up in about two weeks - April 8th. You should run your
title and abstract by your committee chair for their approval before submitting. This is a great
opportunity to showcase the exciting and important research we are doing in the FCS department
and excellent experience for graduate students.
Also, please note that as the semester winds down, you should reserve Wed. afternoons for
thesis and non-thesis defenses. Miriam will be defending her thesis at the end of April, and Andrew
and Barbara will be defending their non-thesis projects in a poster session (date to be announced).
Hopefully we'll have a few more defenses coming up, too.
As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Dear CSBS faculty and students:
The College of Social and Behavioral Science will host its first Student Research Day on April 28, 2011 in Orson Spencer Hall – 2nd Floor. Both graduate and undergraduate students in the college will be given the opportunity to showcase original research projects using poster presentations. A panel of faculty judges will evaluate the projects. Three cash prizes will be awarded for best posters in the graduate research and undergraduate research categories (First Prize: $250,
Second Prize: $150, and Third Prize: $100).
Students must notify the college of their intention to participate by email no later than 5 pm, April 8th, 2011, stating:
•Your name, email address, and primary departmental or program affiliation.
•The name of your advisor and his/her primary departmental or program affiliation.
•Poster title and list of author names and institutional affiliations.
•A 150 word abstract describing the research sent as an attached Word document (please, no embedded tables or figures).
Students must be the primary producer of the work. The research must be original work. Posters prepared as part of a class project or already presented at conferences are welcome.
Please send these submissions to dean at csbs.utah.edu. Please note that the abstracts will be posted on the college website. If you have concerns regarding copyright or patent issues, you should consult your advisor. Unless we are informed otherwise, the full title and abstract will be printed.
The presentation must be in the form of a poster and no larger than 3 ft by 4 ft. Tape will be provided for hanging the posters. Please bring your poster to OSH 208 between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on April 28 to ensure your poster is set up for viewing by noon. Posters will remain on display through commencement – Friday, May 6.
Please click http://www.csbs.utah.edu/ora/CSBS%20ResearchDayAnnouncement.pdf for a poster of this event. Please distribute this announcement to your students.
Thank you for your support!
