Chris's message to Justin coincides with some thoughts in my own mind
over the question of "contradictions" within the list. Speaking as
somebody who has clashed numerous times with Justin, I am sorry to see
him go. Justin is a well-respected socialist scholar who has published in
"Socialist Register" and who has a book coming shortly called "Beyond
Communism and Capitalism: The Role of Markets in a New Socialism"
(Humanities Press). I plan to buy this book as soon as it comes out and
attack it like a pit bull.
We should treat Leo Casey and Tim Wolforth in the same way as Justin.
While I disagree with about 98% (make that 99%) of what they say, they
are articulate and intelligent defenders of social democracy or
democratic socialism, whatever you want to call it.
Social Democracy is a current WITHIN the worker's movement and not
outside it. The politics of DSA represents a certain constituency within
the American working-class. As such, it must be debated and challenged
but not read out of the socialist movement.
Working in the Cental America solidarity movement brought me into contact
with large numbers of DSAers and I would say without their efforts, the
movement wouldn't have even enjoyed the modest success that it did. The
DSAers were particularly important in mobilizing trade-union support. It
should also be noted that social democrats like Guillermo Ungo were
integral to the Salvadoran revolution, a movement whose progress has been
stalled but which has not been defeated.
As we move forward to wiping the capitalist system off the face of the
earth and living like free human beings for the first time in our life,
we will have to make common cause with our social democratic brothers and
