I found Andy's post very helpful. Just one comment. He wrote:

If true, and I see no reason to dispute it, this seems to me to have many
important implications. One question it raises is how can we know when we
have a reasonable chance of success. I don't know the answert to this, but
it does follow that any possibility of radical social change depends on
there being an affirmative answer to this question.
