Non-violence and social change

I am not a pacifist, and I am not saying that violence NEVER has a place
in human affairs. But I do think there is much to commend in the
strategy of non-violence. I think that revolutions which depend upon the
tools of violence must necessarily strengthen those tools, and may
seriously affect the "humanity" of the victors in post-revolutionary
periods. A good book on the subject is: Gene Sharp, SOCIAL POWER AND
POLITICAL FREEDOM (Boston, Porter Sargent, 1980); and Gene Sharp, THE
POLITICS OF NONVIOLENT ACTION: POWER AND STRUGGLE (Boston, Porter
Sargent, 1973).
