racism in East Europe

I had the same experience in Bejing a couple of years ago. Ordinary people
that I met were totally amazed when I told them I am a US Communist. In this
case I think it's very much because of the lack of contact with anything but
US Businessmen in China. Most party members were not surprised and for the
most part better informed about US politics. I don't read anything sinister
into this, like only they had access - but rather, like anywhere else, they
tend to be more interested in other countries and in world politics.
