I think you are quite right to point to the quietist, anti-
liberationist character of much African-American Christian
theology at the time of slavery.  But don't forget that
many of the Northern white abolitionists--especially
women abolitionists--were strongly motivated by *their*
Christian beliefs.  Religion is not and has never been
a uniformly liberationist or uniformly anti-liberationist social
force, and it would be silly to pretend otherwise.  It is indeed
the "opium of the people" *and* "the heart of a heartless world".
