Land and us

I came across this quote from Aldo Leopold's _A Sand County
Almanac_ (one of those "classics" I've never read) in an essay by
John Bellamy Foster ("Global ecology and the common good,"
_Monthly Review_, February 1995):
"We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to
us. When we begin to see land as a community to which we belong,
we may begin to use it with love and respect."
I think this same might apply to many aspects of our relations
with nature and each other.
