To whomever it was who called me out on this awkward solecism: you're right.
I picked up the phrase from Dick Lewontin's June (or was it July?) 1983
article in the New York Review of Books (serves me right!) entitled, I
think, "Darwin's Real Revolution." Also, R.H. Wharton uses the term in his
Darwinian Revolution in Science.
The proper term is, as you suggest, Cartesian.
