Louis: I have a high regard for the writings of George Novack, who was
the "house philosopher" of the American ex-Trotskyist group the Socialist
Workers Party. His speciality is the comparison of the Marxist method
with other philosophical schools, including pragmatism and existentialism.
He is not any kind of innovator like Althusser etc. He was content to be
a popularizer of Marxism and wrote in a very lucid and straightforward
manner. If you can ignore the occasional cheerleading he indulges in for
the SWP, you will find any one of his books extremely useful.
