I am glad if we are trying to use the resources of the net
to clarify this question. Two comments in relation to Adolfo's
post.

1) Engels definitely argues in "The Law of Value" that the
embryo capitalism arose out of communistic guild type associations
for trading and mining. So the logic that Lisa J refers to may
not be totally out of the ball court. As Louis G indicates in
another context, it could just possibly fit with a more
complex path to socialism than the simple original marxist
model of unilinear historical development.

2) gentile is based on "gens", the Latin term, hanging over in
roman society that reflected the original tribal roots. It is
similar to clan. I recall this is discussed at length by Engels
in OFPPS.
