CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT (English Version)



   1996 marks the 60th anniversary of the start of the

Spanish Civil War, event that set the stage for the Second World War

and that defined the political and ideological divides of the second

half of the 20th century.

   In commemoration of this occasion, Gustavus Adolphus College

(St. Peter) and Mankato State University (Mankato), institutions located

in south-central Minnesota (USA) will host a conference on the legacy

of the Spanish Civil War, also honoring two local veterans of the Abraham

Lincoln Battalion (US citizens that fought on behalf of the democratic

government of Spain), during October 29 and 30.

   Among the activities scheduled are:



OCTOBER 29

-- 7:00 pm-Lecture:

 Political/Historical background to the conflict

(Prof. Johannes Postma, Mankato State U.)

--7:30-9:00 pm

Screening of documentary "The Good Fight"

OCTOBER 30

-- 10:30-11:30 am

Personal stories: panel discussion by Spanish citizens

on the impact of the war on their families



-- 5:00 -7:00 pm

Why Spain: Presentation by  Clarence Forrester (from Minneapolis,

Minnesota) and Clarence Kailin (Madison, Wisconsin), veterans of

the Abraham Lincoln Battalion of the 15th International Brigade of

the Popular Army of the Spanish Republic (1937-1938)

-Exhibition of period artifacts and memorabilia (photographs, currency,

military equipment, etc..) relating to the conflict.
