ANGELA DAVIS TO JOIN CHICAGO ACTIVISTS IN A FORUM ON POLICE BRUTALITY,
CRIMINAL JUSTICE, AND THE PRISON INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX

Panelists will examine racial and class bias in policing, the criminal
justice system, and how it is linked to the prison industrial complex

Chicago, IL -- On Thursday, September 9, internationally respected social
justice activist Angela Davis will be joined, at the second annual Ida B.
Wells Memorial Lecture, by local activists Susan Esther and Attorney Stan
Willis, to explore the growing epidemic of police brutality, the influence
of racial bias on criminal sentencing and the dehumanization of people of
color within and outside of the prisons.

The event will take place at the Carter G. Woodson Regional Library, at
9525 S. Halsted, at 7:00 p.m. It is sponsored by the Ida B. Wells Forum's
"CommUniversity," an educational project of discussion and debate
organized by Chicago activists, artists and academics.

Davis is an advocate of prison abolition. She alleges that America's
prison industry is an interweaving of corporate and government interests.
Its twofold purpose, she says, is profit and social control. It's public
rationale is the "war on crime."

Esther is co-founder of JUSTICE IS BLIND/MOTHERS AGAINST INJUSTICES, a
research and advocacy group that exposes and combats law-breaking by law
enforcers. The group organizes the annual MOTHER'S DAY MARCH AGAINST
INJUSTICES.

Willis, a widely respected civil rights attorney, is president of the
Chicago Conference of Black Lawyers. He is also chair of the African
American Committee to Save Mumia Abu Jamal and Aaron Patterson.

The event is free and open to the public.
