Jon Flander's great-aunt (?) Helen Hartness Flanders went around with a
tape recorder in the 1950s and got native Vermonters to sing ballads that
they had learned as children. Helen was the wife of Republican Senator
Ralph Flanders, who was one of the first to challenge Joe McCarthy (god,
they don't make them like that anymore.) NPR's "All Things Considered" did
