E.coli (Enterobacteria coli) [coli refers to the colon - the lower part of
the alimentary canal - where the bacterium has its home in most mammals) has
for yonks been used as an "indicator organism" to tell if water is polluted
and undrinkable. Most varieties are benign - and their presence merely
indicates the likelihood of more pathogenic organisms also being present.

Unfortunately a new variety of E, coli has recently surfaced which has
itself been the cause of a variety of "food poisoning" outbreaks.

Surface wells are, of course, highly susceptible to contmination by farm
animal excreemnt ... makes me wonder if I ought to write a screed onthe
history of water treatment in UK!!!
