A couple marginal historical points. There was never anything remotely
like "democracy" in Rome -- the Roman Republic being totally dominated
by a bunch of really aggrressive exploiters. And what got Caesar
assassinated, really, was that he was about the closest Rome ever came
to someone who wanted exploitation moderated. His position roughly
was that the ruling class was killing the goose that laid the golden
eggs by over-exploiting. There was a good article on this in MR a few
years ago.
