This internationally award-winning feature film is based on the best selling
novel Kara Kitap (The Black Book) by Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk. A beautiful
woman hires a young photographer to roam the streets photographing faces. The
mysterious woman finds the face she seeks: a watchmaker with whom she then
disappears. Obsessed by the seductive woman, the photographer embarks on a
search for her, an odyssey which delves into the subconscious and the world of
symbols. Particularly outstanding are the images of Black Sea villages. Dir:

THE SINGING SHEIKH 1991 10min V3605 [Iran]

Considered the voice of the oppressed, Sheikh Iman is famous throughout the Arab
world for his compositions criticizing the ruling classes. He is banned from
state radio and TV and often  imprisoned. This film assess his influence in his
native Egypt. Dir: Heiny Srour.
 

AL-SHARIDA [THE WANDERER] 1985 91min V2421 [Egypt]

The screenplay of this feature film is based on a novella by Naguib Mahfouz,
1989 Nobel Prize winning Egyptian writer. Stars are Nagla Fathi, Mahmoud Yasin
and Nabil Abid. Here a
professional woman, a successful lawyer of humble origins, finds her
relationship with her less educated by entrepreneurially wealthy husband
strained; a universal theme produced as typical Egyptian melodrama. Dir.: Ashraf

SONG OF UMM DALAILA: THE STORY OF THE SAHRAWIS 1993 35min. V4823 [Algeria,
Morocco]

This video records the life of the Sahrawi refugees - 80% women - in four
refugee camps in
Southwest Algeria, summarizing their twenty year struggle for independence from
Moroccan domination. Included are scenes of Moroccan occupied Western Sahara.

SHAHSAVAN NOMADS OF IRAN 1984 30min V579 [Iran]

A documentary filmed between 1977-1979 and released in 1984 traces the seasonal
migration of the Shahsavan nomads of northwestern Iran. Attention is given to
the role of women in the tribal ecosystem as well as the changes in migrational
