I would have to agree with this assessment.  The biggest flaw in the Republican
strategy has been its inability to mobilize the masses, even when there were good
opportunities for doing so and even when there was clearly support for Republicanism

I say that as a Republican Socialist.  While I have supported the armed struggle
(though not the Provisional IRA) as both an offensive and a defensive strategy, armed
struggle was never going to lead anywhere without mass mobilization.  Surrendering was
really the only way the Provisionals could go in the end.
