Sorry for the outburst. I can't begin to describe my outrage. I am not even
sure what the hell they've managed to screw up. I see that Norm Dixon sent
a GLW post to that list, which seems to have ended up here as well.
Meanwhile, when I sent my complaint to *their address*, it ended up here
for the same screwed up reason.
Subbing people to mailing lists without their knowledge is not only a
disgusting breach of netiquette, but socialist principles as well. As I
tried to explain to Mark, making connections to left groups (and mailing
lists broadly speaking fall into this category) must be done with the full
consensus of both parties.
What's particularly stupid and self-defeating about it is that you alienate
people who might be winnable to your cause. I started this mailing list on
May '98 with a group of 50 people, who were refugees from another Marxism
list that had been hijacked by a Maoist fan of Richard Pipes. The idea of
adding everybody from the old list to the new list never entered my mind,
even though I had everybody's email address.
Now that we are 5 times larger, I would hope that we continue to grow on
the same basis: voluntary association. I 'recruit' people to the list just
the way I did when I belonged to a socialist group in a prior lifetime. I
try to make it attractive as possible and then allow people to make their
own decision. That's the only way our movement can grow, even in cyberspace.
