Gary is dead right to call the loyalist sectarian butchers 'death squads'.
That is precisely what they were.  And they were not 'autonomous' from the
British, as you seem to suggest.  Not only were many of them directly
linked, in a myriad of ways, to the state (via the 'security' forces), but
the whole loyalist set-up was a product of British rule in Ireland.  If
there had been no British colonialism, there would have been no loyalism.
