transport workers) in Germany today. E.g. all public transport in Munich was
stopped this morning. According to the unions participation in the strike
was even better than expected. There were similiar actions in Berlin,
Dresden, Leipzig, Frankfurt, Bremen, Hamburg, Schwerin, Zwickau, Magedeburg,
Bonn, Kiel, Flensburg, Düsseldorf, Mülheim/Ruhr and Bielefeld.

Strike stops public transport in Germany

Thousands of workers have staged a series of warning strikes in cities
across Germany, bringing much of local public transport to a halt.

Workers in schools and hospitals are also taking part in the stoppages.

The trade unions are demanding a five-percent pay rise and equal pay for
workers in eastern and western Germany.

The government has offered a pay increase of around one percent.

Further strikes are planned for Friday when the next round of talks is due
to start.
