Hierarchy. Palo Alto, Ca.: Cheshire Books, 1982.
(The most extensive statement by this seminal thinker on communalism and
hierarchy. He contrasts the outlook of organic society with that of
mechanical societies. "The great project of our time", he writes, "must be
to open the other eye; to see all-sidedly and wholly, to heal and transcend
the cleavage between humanity and nature that came with early wisdom".
Bookchin's style of writing is sometimes turgid, but his analysis of
communal traditions in the West shows some cultural roots to which we can
turn for cultural forms necessary for bioregional living.)

sensitive and sensible book that argues for conserving the variety of nature
