Kudamkulam N-plant to get Russian uranium
MUMBAI: Russia has guaranteed lifetime supply of enriched Uranium and spare
parts for the two much-awaited units of light water 1000 mw nuclear power
plants (VVER-1000) at Kudamkulam in Tamil Nadu, according to Nuclear Power
Corporation.
Russia has also allowed Department of Atomic Energy to keep the 'spent fuel'
as per the recent agreement in contrast to the earlier agreement where the
spent fuel had to be taken back by them, S K Jain, director of NPCIL's
Kudamkulam project, said here on Wednesday.
The spent fuel will be Indian property and "we can make use of it in making
mixed oxide fuel for use in the same reactor", Jain said.
He said the entire fuel cycle of the plant would be in line with
International Atomic Energy Agency's safeguards.
Russia has also agreed to supply energy from the plant at a rate cheaper
than any thermal plant in that area, he said.
On the total cost of the plant, Jain said that factor would be clear only
after the techno-commercial report is ready. It will be available soon after
the detailed project report in April 2001, he said.
Jain said the designs of the two plants were being approved by both the
NPCIL and the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.
"Both the submission of the DPR and the design clearances from AERB are much
ahead of schedule", he said. (PTI)
