Police Crackdown on Pro-Biafra Agitators Continues
Ignatius Chukwu, Port Harcourt

THE police in Rivers State have continued the pursuit of and clampdown of
anybody believed to have a hand in the recent pro-Biafra rally in Oyigbo,
Rivers State.

Two local chiefs, Sam Ilesialor (48) and Jude Iwu (60) were arrested Tuesday
at about 11.30 p.m. in their various homes in Oyigbo.

The chiefs may be helping the police in locating those suspected to be
behind the rally organised by the Movement for the Actualisation of the
Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) in the area last week, a rally that ended
in a tragedy when two persons were shot dead.
Two others were also hospitalised while six persons were arrested. One of the
detainees, Bernard Amaka (47), was seen at the police headquarters with a
fractured head. Also, two of those previously arrested, Godwin Ndumere and
Christian Iwuanyanwu, were seen lying on the floor with bullets wounds. The
men were said to be still carrying bullets in their bodies since Thursday
last week without any form of medical attention.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnanna Ama, has repeatedly denied
the use of guns in dispensing the pro-Biafra activists. He could not,
however, account for the gunshot injuries on some of the detainees.Ama has
also not admitted that any person was killed but said that police applied
reasonable force in dislodging the MASSOB members.

MASSOB officials had told the press that the bodies of those killed, whose
names were given as Emeka, Ike and Michael Uche, were scooped away by the
men of the Swift Operation Squad (SOS), an elite security outfit which
handles hard crimes in the state.
