Marx was presumably using "idiocy" in the Greek sense (the racist
technical meaning of the term not having been invented in Marx's day),
and even in the 1930s, with automobiles, and in the relatively thickly
populated rural areas of southwestern Michigan, rural life was to some
extent characterized by isolation. Hence Marx's remark was never glib to
begin with.
