One of the most progressive Peronist experts in education, and a friend of
mine, is Ana Lorenzo. Daughter of a Spanish Republican who had fled after the
defeat of Franco, and very linked to the Leftist educational milieux in
Argentina (during the 60s and early 70s she was instructor at Zumerland, the
then famous youth camp of the pro-Communist Jews in Buenos Aires), she kept a
very warm heart for Spanish revolutionaries and progressives.
During the 80s, in fact, she married a Socialist Spanish, namely a cousin of
Javier Solana (don't remember his first name now, but his family name was also
Madariaga: both were related to the great intellectual Salvador de Madariaga).
Ana told me that when the Balkan events began to develop, and Solana assumed
his NATO leadership, his husband declared that his cousin, comrade of anti-
Franco struggle, and loved relative was dead. He never spoke with Solana again.
Unfortunately, material death stroke him before Javier.
Such is bad luck, sometimes.
