>'Poland counts the cost'.... After reading this commentary, I'm
>not sure if Germany is trying to make Poland the Mexico of Europe, or if
>it is the other way around.... the US is trying to make Mexico into the
>Poland of the Americas?
Speaking of Mexico, I got the latest NLR in my mail tonight, which will be
my final copy after finally terminating a subscription going back to 1994.
It has an interview with Jorge Castenada, the foreign minister of Vicente
Fox's new rightwing government in Mexico that has attracted the support of
a certain sector of the academic left. The interview, which is at:
http://www.newleftreview.net, is simply appalling based on the evidence of
what I saw while sitting on the throne. If the paper wasn't so stiff, I
would have used it as toilet paper. This fucking renegade from socialism
gets the kind of deferential treatment that Ted Koppel gives to Henry
Kissinger. It is also reminiscent of a typical McNeil-Lehrer interview on
PBS in the USA. Alex Cockburn once had a pip of a sendup of McNeil-Lehrer
interview with Hitler in 1943:
McNeil-Lehrer: Mr. President, there are those who say you are going too far
with your treatment of the Jews. How would you respond to that criticism?
Hitler: We had no choice. The Jews were assisting the Bolsheviks who sought
to destroy Germany.
McNeil-Lehrer: I see. Let's talk now about your plans to visit Italy this
spring. What will you and President Mussolini discuss?
