China Vows to Continue Its Support for Cuba

BEIJING, Mar 1, 2001 -- (Agence France Presse) China will continue its
support for Cuba in its fight for national independence and the cause of
socialist construction, China told Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez
Roque Thursday.

Perez, who is visiting Beijing this week, thanked the Chinese government
for its continued support, adding that Cuba is pleased with the
continuous development of relations with China, the Chinese news agency
Xinhua said.

China also thanked Cuba for its firm support on issues including human
rights and its fight for reunification with Taiwan, said Chinese Vice
Premier Qian Qichen, who met with Perez Thursday.

The two countries have maintained close political and trade relations.
They signed a military agreement, the details of which were not
released, during a visit to the island by Chinese People's Liberation
Army commander Fu Quanyou late last year.

Perez is here for an official visit as a guest of Chinese Foreign
Minister Tang Jiaxuan.
