But they compete in different markets.  China produces low-grade to
medium-grade goods, but relies heavily on foreign licensing and knowhow;
Taiwan is rapidly gearing up to produce such knowhow (VIA, for instance,
is climbing into the CPU biz, which takes serious chutzpah -- AMD and
Intel are ferocious competitors). Aside from cheering VIA on (anything
which destroys Andy Grove's stock options is, on the whole, probably a
good thing for the world), the Taiwanese Left ought to push for a greatly
expanded welfare state, investment in education, and environmental
cleanup.
