Vietnam lacks nearly 85,000 teachers
HANOI, Vietnam: Vietnam faces a serious shortage of nearly 85,000 teachers,
a local newspaper reported on Monday.
There is a shortage of 19,600 elementary school teachers, 43,520 secondary
school teachers and 20,760 high school teachers, the Tien Phong (Vanguard)
newspaper said.
It said makeshift classrooms still account for about 20 percent of total
classrooms in the country, and there are still more than 1,000 classrooms in
which students must study in three shifts a day.
Last year, the government spent nearly 11 trillion dong ($750 million) -
about 15 per cent of its total budget - on education, but it still satisfied
only 70 percent of the educational needs, the newspaper said.
Local media have reported that many teachers, especially in the southern
Mekong Delta, have quit their jobs in recent years to find better-paying
professions. The average monthly salary of teachers is about $40. (AP)
