The giant's feet of clay
Chaos reigned, hubris came home to roost -- and Gamal Nkrumah looked on in
Al-Ahram, September 13-19
Tuesday 11 September will go down in history as a day that changed the
world. Doomsday or the Day of Judgement: incredulity met the news that
came -- quite literally -- like a bolt from the blue. Shocking images of the
World Trade Center's twin towers collapsing flashed across television
screens worldwide. Only one thing stayed the same: the unmistakable
discrepancy between official statements and popular reactions in the South.
Ways of seeing
By C. Rammanohar Reddy
CAPITALISM IS all powerful. Yet, a few dozen terrorists armed with nothing
of consequence can cause human and economic mayhem in the world's biggest
financial centre by commandeering four aircraft and ramming two of them into
buildings that are a symbol of globalisation. Is this a case of the
marginalised getting their revenge against capitalism - even if an insane
and cruel manner? In symbol and substance, the events of the past week have
been so enormous that for now neither the questions nor the answers can go
beyond the trite. One can only venture to offer ways of seeing what has
happened and speculate on where the world could go from here.
Attacks on U.S. -- Implications, Causes, Repercussions
The recent attacks on the U.S. are definitely going to have huge
repercussions around the world. A careful analysis must be made of the root
causes and the potential aftermath. . . .
It seems that all of this anti-Islamic rhetoric is meant to justify
repression of Muslims and the entire Islamic movement. Perhaps Americans and
U.S. officials should look inside instead of outside their country for the
roots and causes of this catastrophe.
For the arrogance of power America now pays a terrible price
By Jonathan Power
THE AMERICAN nation appears not only immensely distressed and angry about
the bombings but surprised too. It cannot understand why anyone should be
moved by such hatred against it and, inured from the rest of us by the
isolationism of most of its political representatives and its media, it has
little idea of the currents swirling against it. An event of this magnitude
was not only unimagined, it was unimaginable.
