the role of gangs

During the mid-1990s, leaders of the Latin King and Queen
Nation in New York City began to turn their organization
toward the political struggle, emulating the Young Lords'
example. Their effort was dealt serious blows by the
police and the Giuliani administration, which carried out
a far-reaching demonization campaign against them.
I recall a similar attack by the state against the Los
Angeles Crips and Bloods, who tried to forge an activist
alliance following the LA rebellion of 1992.
Clearly the capitalist state doesn't underestimate the
political potential of street youth organizations. Neither
should we.
