what to make of "conspiracy theories"?,

Mark's points seem quite valid to me.  Most conspiracy theories seem
rooted in a moralistic pining for "good government" more than any
substantial change in the socioeconomic order.  But the incipient
suspicions they give rise to in the young can be heuristic if the
occasion presents itself.
Afterall, the ruthlessness of power has conspiratorial aspects.

And remember:
Just because you're paranoid does not mean they are not out to get you.
