The Cynicism of the Spanish King

The king of the Spaniards, Juan Carlos Bourbon, spent a great part of his
time sailing his boat -- a gift from a corporation -- on the Mediterranean
sea, while Euskadi Ta Askatasuna observed a 14-month truce despite the
assassination of one of its members by paramilitary forces. Obviously, the
Bourbon -- General Franco's personally designated heir -- was not interested
in ending ETA's violence.

But now the king of the Spaniards attempts to use the September 11 tragedy
to legitimize his government's policy of repression in Navarre -- the
occupied Basque state.
