Note to/re SWP-US (etc.) survivors

I don't discount the need for you all to work through your feelings here,
and, on another level, these are funny stories and probably important
cautionary tales.

I just don't want to get the younger/newer people who are reading this list
to get the idea that is the kind of thing that necessarily awaits you if you
join a socialist party, or that these horror stories demonstrate that it is
foolish to join socialist parties.  In fact, young revolutionaries should
join parties and can change history by doing so.  They have to be 'wise
consumers', however, and ask questions, and should ideally not unthinkingly
join the first group they run into.

That at any rate is my view.  I know that there are others here who believe
that pretty much all the parties currently in existence, in the US anyway,
are second- or third-rate pretenders, capable perhaps of doing a few useful
things, but basically just deluded sects, occupying the stage only until the
"real Marxists" come along, whenever and if ever.  Naturally I disagree with
this view, and I would not like to see anyone led to adopt it on the
strength of accounts of the bizarre habits of SWP-US/NZ organizers in the
1960's and 1970's.
