Dear comrades,

Thanks for your letter of 21 November 2002.

You raise a number of political issues which you see as obstacles to unity
between the ISO and Socialist Alternative. We acknowledge that a number of
important political differences clearly do exist between our two
organisations and we agree that these differences should not simply be
brushed under the carpet. Nevertheless, we don't feel that the scale of the
differences is so great that they should rule out unity. We feel that a
range of opinions on the issues you raise is quite compatible with
membership of one united revolutionary organisation. These issues are quite
capable of being discussed in a comradely spirit in a united group.
Moreover given that the ISO and Socialist Alternative are of roughly
comparable size it is not the case that one group would necessarily occupy
a dominating position in a united group.

We are more than happy to discuss the issues you have raised (and any
others that may arise) both in an attempt to clear the air and to see if
the differences are as profound as either group might feel in advance of
serious discussions. Our proposal was never one of rushing into unity
overnight. We quite appreciate that a sustained period of discussion and
joint work will be necessary to facilitate unity on the best possible basis.

Can we suggest that one way to proceed would be to organise a time for a
meeting within the next week between representatives of our national
leadership bodies where we work out a jointly agreed format for ongoing
discussions.

Yours comradely

Diane Fieldes
