On AOL subscriber postings to the list:

The AOL connection can be used as if it were a normal ISP connection, that
is, you can use another mail program. AOL Mail is so god-awful poor that
this is well worth exploring. Free pop3 (Post Office Protocol, the internet
standard)-enabled accounts are available from various sources, including
various national Yahoo! portals, but not the American one, where this
feature costs something like $30/year. You can then use something like
Outlook express or Eudora or any number of other email programs to retrieve
and answer your mail.
