Critics of Abraham Lincoln always seem to assume that he had something
like modern presidential powers.  He was elected on a third party ticket
with 37-38% of the popular vote.

The military openly ignored orders from this commander-in-chief.

He was only the ringmaster of a very big and complex circus.
