The failure of radical land reform in the South extended the political
response to demands for radical land reform in the North...which was
really the vital political impact of the emerging labor movement.

The question becomes easy when one focuses on a particular item, like
the fate of the freedmen. A good analysis is going to have to address
the connection between factors usually seen as distinct considerations.

Understanding the impact of emancipation on wage workers is going to be
one of the toughest aspects of this. Certainly, it did not create a
homogeneous class identity in the U.S. comparable to the European
situation.

Solidarity!
