Protesters in Turkey Burn U.S. Flags

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) - About 3,000 protesters burned American, British and
Israeli flags on Sunday during a demonstration against a possible U.S.-led
war in neighboring Iraq.

NATO member Turkey is a close U.S. ally, but anti-war sentiment runs high
among its people. Turkey is holding talks with U.S. military officials but
has not committed to allowing the use of Turkish territory or air bases in a
war against Iraq.

``Down with America! Killer America!,'' the demonstrators chanted. Others
held up banners reading, ``No to war.''

Turkey is a Muslim country, and many here oppose a war against another
Muslim country.

Turkey also fears that a war in the region could ravage its crisis-ridden
economy, send tens of thousands of refugees to its border and even lead to
the formation of an independent Kurdish state in northern Iraq, which
Turkish officials say could inspire autonomy-seeking Turkish Kurdish rebels.
