Secessionist plans for a peaceful withdrawal from the United States or,
failing that, their military triumph hinged on its economic ties to
Britain. Dependent on Southern cotton, the argument ran, Britain would
ultimately protect their interests in North America.
More than this--and notwithstanding a lot of BS spouted by
neo-Confederates today--the secessionists were also very explicit about
their ideological repudiation of the ideas articulated in the American
Declaration of Independence. The major Southern periodicals and
newspapers were full of this stuff: talk of liberty and equality leads
to abolitionism, socialism, agrarianism, free love, the end of
civilization, etc., etc.
