Response (Jim C):Before that it was in James Bamford's "Body of Secrets."
Interesting thing about Bamford, a close friend of Robert Hansen the FBI
Counter-intelligence guy who worked for the Soviets and later Russians,
is that when Bamford wrote his first book "The Puzzle Palace", the NSA was
all over him with threats, they tried to suppress the book, and all members
of NSA were told they could not even comment on having read the book let
alone on its accuracy. Later the NSA decided if they could not threaten him
they would coopt him and gave him unprecedented access to NSA files. Then
they brought him into NSA (actually in their buildings) to give lectures to
NSA personnel on the history of NSA and he continues to give lectures to NSA
personnel inside.
