In Defense of Fidel Castro

Bush IS targetting Cuba and he IS
demanding that it disarm. Haven't
you heard of Helms-Burton and
Torricelli and the CAA? No, we
do NOT call on Cuba to comply
with Bush's requests. Get real!

Fidel wears different hats and he
happens to be wearing two of his
hats at the moment when reporting
TO the Cuban National Assembly
on his travels TO the Non-Aligned.

You say that:
"Cuba has taken several positions
which run counter to revolutionary
analysis, based on its perception
of its own national interest." Alas,
you don't document this allegation.

Believe me, I spend a lot of time in
Cuba and am very enthusiastic
about the Cuban Revolution today.

That doesn't mean I don't see the
many problemmatic things which
are obviously present there, from
a dull, repetive media, bureaucracy,
discouragement of initiative and more.

However, you say:
"Defending the Cuban Revolution is not
at all the same thing as uncritically
promoting every analysis of its brilliant,
powerful, and heroic leader."

Fidel IS "brilliant, powerful and heroic"
but that doesn't mean he can't put his
foot in his mouth and say and do dumb
things. He's done that a few times, but
where you and I differ is that I don't at
all think you've cited him being wrong.

You have every right to comment on
what Fidel Castro does and says.

Walter Lippmann.

The request to distribute the speech
was preceded by the claim that this
is the way out of war for Iraq and the world.

We can say that Cuba has taken several
positions which run counter to revolutionary
analysis, based on its perception of its own
national interest. That might be more subtle
and nuanced than saying Fidel has shown
everybody the way out, and that requires
that we attach such a nuanced analysis to
the dissemination of the speech.

Defending the Cuban Revolution is not
at all the same thing as uncritically
promoting every analysis of its brilliant,
powerful, and heroic leader.
