Jackson Turner Main's SOCIAL STRUCTURE OF REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA divides
early society here into several distinct types: Urban; Commercial
Farming; Subsistence Farming; and, the Frontier.  As well, the first two
also had distinct regional variations between New England, the
Mid-Atlantic and the South.  The book is from 1965 but stands up pretty
well.

Again, one of the problems a lot of participants have in these
discussions is the tendency to be nonspecific as to period and leap
generations.  This only muddies things.
