...Speaking of the Iroquois confederacy recalls the earlier post on
Lewis Henry Morgan.  I recall seeing this in an old Rochester historical
society bulletin.  When Morgan sought letters of introduction to people
in upstate New York who had connections to Indians, he was pointed to
John Grieg, the head of the Fourieriest movement in western New York and
the founder of several upstate communities. 

The influence of Indians on the American Left was strong almost from the
inception.
